The Case of the Crazy Long Big Toes

So.....I was born with REALLY long big toes.  Now this wouldn't be so weird except for the fact that the other toes are super short.  I HATED my toes growing up.  It was really embarrassing to me.  I have NEVER in my life met anyone that had toes like me.  So when I was 15 years old I had to have ankle reconstruction surgery (another long story for another day) and my orthopedic surgeon asked if he could shorten my big toes.  My response was, "YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
After surgery I went from a size 13 to a size 11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wooo Hoooo!!!!
Even though I have pain and problems with my toes from the surgery, I am really grateful to this doctor for helping me with something that made me feel like a freak of nature.  Trust me I already had enough on my plate in the feeling like a freak of nature department - I was 6'1" by age 12.
So here is what my toes looked like
BEFORE surgery

So the REAL reason for this post is to talk about my daughter.  UNFORTUNATELY,  she inherited my toes......SERIOUSLY??!!??!!??!!  NOT cool.
So here is a picture of her right big toe (the left side toes look the same).  Weird, right??  Anyways, my husband and I took her to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon about 6 months ago to see what our options were.  I wanted them to fix the toes, but I was hoping they had a better way to do it than what they did to my toes back in 1986.  We decided the least evasive option was to have minor surgery and fuse the growth plate in her toe that was EXCESSIVELY long.  The doctor is hopeful that big toe will stop growing and the little toes will catch up some.  If this doesn't work then when she is a teen and done growing we can look at shortening the toe.  FYI: She already wears a size 8 1/2 women's shoe at age 7!!!!
So we scheduled her surgery for the 1st week in April during her spring break.  She did NOT want to miss any school - she LOVES school.
We had to be at Doernbecher Children's Hospital at 6 am...yikes!!  So we decided to get a hotel room in downtown Portland and have some fun the day before.   We went to G6 Air park in Vancouver with Aunty Kim and left Berkeley with her.  We then checked into the Hilton downtown.  They gave us a corner room with windows lining two walls.  It was an AMAZING view.

We then got all pretty and we went out to dinner at a yummy Italian restaurant.
While we were eating we spotted Wolf Man

Carlie LOVED having one on one time with her mommy and daddy.  After dinner we got some junk food, went swimming, and then tried to go to bed early. We had to be up at 5 am!!!
 Presenting Carlie Aldridge
having fun with the revolving door
waiting at for the valet at 5:45 am
cuddling with her pillow pet from grandma
got the gown on....time to rock this surgery
Popsicle time in recovery - still pretty groggy
bloody toes - but super cute pink and purple bandages!!
waiting for the pain meds at the hospital pharmacy
 another shot of the toes.
Here is what Berkeley was doing while we were at the hospital before the crack of dawn.  Snuggle time with cousin Adan!!!!  So cute!!!

Carlie was such a great patient.  She was very brave and didn't need any pain meds after the 1st day.  She was told to walk on her heels for the next 5 days and then she could go to school.  She spent a few days on the couch being spoiled rotten and playing with the surgery care package my mom had sent her.  She was afraid to walk so she crawled around for a few days.  Wish I had taken a picture of that.  Anyways, Corey's family was having an Easter weekend get together in The Dalles the weekend after her surgery.  We told Carlie we wouldn't be able to go unless she started walking - guess what?... 5 minutes later after crying about it she was walking around.  I guess she really wanted to go :)

  1. Gina - how did I miss this post???? Libby has that same big toe!! I thought the gap was because of her syndactyly but it looks identical to that except on a smaller version. She is TALL also. She is wearing the clothes that Ella wore at age 5 - right before the steroids. Our podiatrist never mentioned anything about the big toe but this was when she was a newborn. We are going back for a flat foot consult for orthopedics and hopefully not braces. I am going to bring my iPad or phone and show him these pics.

  2. I don't know how to really work the internet on my phone still but I'm 20 years old and have never met anyone with this problem I tried writing earlier but am not sure it went through. I too have the long toe and really bad self esteem that fallows. I have never worn sandals in my life not even to the beach. This has been by biggest insecurity and cause of embarassment even amongst my own family. Since I was introduced to this surgery I have been doing my research and would love to request to see if you can post up pictures of your feet now after the surgery there aren't many online and I would love to see the after results to help me with my decision whether to go get the same surgery or not.
Thank you so much for posting this up it has been so helpful to me.

    1. I am so happy you found my post about my daughter's and my CRAZY toes. I will try to post some pics of my toes post surgery. They look way more normal. That is horrible that you have never worn sandals....I would highly suggest getting the surgery.

    2. I have the same exact problem. I am glad I came across this page, because I never knew that other people had feet like mine. I also never wear sandals or anything that shows my toes. I have been invited to go swimming with my friends multiple times, but I have turned them down because I don't want to take off my shoes. And if I decided to wear water shoes, I would just look like a dork. My family teases me about my big toe and I feel uncomfortable being barefoot around my own family. I am pretty short, which is weird. I am only 5'2 and wear a size 9 in shoes. If my big toe was a normal size I would probably be wearing a size 6 1/2 in shoes. I am wondering where you got your toes done and what were the expenses?

  5. I recently came upon this post and just wanted to share that I have the same situation with my big toe. The little ones are about an inch or so long and my big toes are double the length. I've had it since I can remember and I'm 20 years old now. I had no idea there was actually a surgery for it. If you had pics of your post op that'd be awesome to compare. Was the surgery expensive?

  8. I would love to talk to you about your experience with the feet. I have the same feet (but much uglier) and I have never been able to get any answers. Could you describe your pain since?

  9. I have the exact same thing. I was incredibly self conscious of my feet growing up. I NEVER wore sandals, and I'm 5'2" and wear size 11 women's, sometimes 12! I'm a little less self conscious of them now, but I still really wish I could get them shortened. I've never really looked into it because everyone always says it would cause a variety of problems... I'm curious if your daughter's doctor told you anything about what it would be like and/or what it would cost to get her toes shortened? Best wishes to you both.

  10. It feels so good to know I am not alone, my shorter toes never grew and I was fortunate to have my big toe shortened, my big toe does not bend and I have a nasty scar on each big toe, I still struggle with esteem as I feel that people will somehow know due to the scars. I am just incredibly blessed to finally know that I am not alone, thank you so much for this post, I hope surgery was a complete success

  11. I have the same long big toe but, I do not have the space between my 1st and 2nd toes. I'm 34yrs old and my oldest daughter who is now 14 inherited the long big toe while my youngest did not. I used to hate it but, now that I'm older I've come to accept them as is. And I don't think it's necessarily a genetic trait because no one else in my family has the long big toe besides my daughter and I. Best of luck to you and your family and hopefully you regain all of your confidence.

    1. It's genetic, it just doesn't get carried on to everyone, so can not be present in every generation. You may find (though difficult to find out) that a great, great great somebody would have had the big toe gene. I'm the same. I have a big toe and do does my son, hut not my other two children. I guarantee, that my grand children (when that day comes) probably won't have it and even my great grandchildren, but someone, some day will have it down my family tree.

    1. I have the same problem. A massive big toe on each giant foot. I have been looked at like I am a monster and now I refuse to show my feet until I can find a solution. I feel like a monster and have never had a bf cause I don't want anyone to see them and I hide them under the sand at the beach

  15. I suffer with the big toe syndrome, I always cover my feet up. I tried to wear opened toed high heeled shoes when I was younger, but people would point and laugh at my big toe. So I don't bother now, I'll go and sit the other side of the beach if I can. And swim in secluded areas, I'm 5ft 3 I'm a size 6 shoe. But my big toe is so much bigger,I'm glad I found this to. We're not alone lol!

  16. Im From Canada ladies and I have this horrible condition too. It's my heart's wish to have my feet fixed. I can't find anyone here that can help me. This would Change my life. Here is a picture of my toes. Can anyone help!!!!!!!

  17. My toes are the same but I'm not getting them fixed, because I think they would look worse. My big toe seems to be the normal size for my foot size but the other four are super short and stumpy and look like they belong on a child's foot. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with toes like this. Maybe a lot of people have these toes, so it's not as weird as we think.

  20. I love my velociraptor claw!! It’s quite the conversation starter and though I trip up stairs, never down, and I’m 5’3 wearing a size 9, there’s nothing more I love than my rainbow flops. In the winter? Birkenstock’s. I stick to shoes that form to my foot.

    1. I love to look hood so when I wear heels... wedges take the edge off of looking like bozo. As for boots, I do get a 1/2 smaller and make sure the length compliments my body more so than my toe, but never go without laces. Always draw attention to ankle and up

    2. Haha! I love to hear stories like yours! Wear your big big toes proud!

  21. Hi! I have the exact same problem, I am 5'4 but wear a size 9 &1/2, and I am very self concious of my feet, And so I always end up looking down to see If my feet look ok. I'm trying to find a safe way to make my big toes shorter without surgery bc my parents wont let me have one and say that I am over reacting. Plz let me know If there is a way:)

  22. Idk why any of you would ever want to do surgery on your bigtoes. You have the greatest feet that exist on earth. Just saying. @Germanictoes

  23. Looks like a mutation in the NPR2 gene.... Very long hallux is pretty distinctive.
